An important early step in building a business is understanding the definition of marketing. For your home based business to be successful, you must create a cohesive and effective business marketing plan. It's impossible to do that if you don't have a sound understanding of what marketing actually is.
Most people think of the words “marketing” and “advertising” as meaning the same thing. But they don’t.
Advertising is part of marketing, but marketing is not advertising alone.
A simple, but accurate, definition is this:
Marketing is anything and everything you do that gets your business name and/or information about your business in front of the marketplace.
As I said, advertising is part of that process, but there are lots of additional ways you market your business.
For example:
- Your business name
- Quality of your product or service
- Grooming and appearance of you and your employees
- All sales activities
- All customer service activities
- Public relations efforts
- Etc.
As you can see, marketing involves all kinds of activities. In fact, virtually everything you do in business has at least some impact on your marketing.
It’s also important to remember that marketing can be both positive and negative. Every positive experience people have with your business is positive marketing. On the other hand, every negative experience they have is negative marketing. And this is not limited to just customers. It’s everyone who comes in contact with your business.
As you proceed with building your home based business, keep in mind what marketing is. Always maintain a keen awareness of how the things you do might impact your marketing.
