Working Freelance Jobs

With the struggling economy, many people are exploring the idea of doing freelance jobs from home. This is especially true of people who have been downsized from their traditional employment.

Some even continue to pursue their new home based career after they've found a new nine to five type job.

Others have made a proactive choice to work for themselves, and have actually quit their full time job to pursue a freelance career.

Working as a freelancer means you're self-employed and not committed to any one particular employer long term, although some projects can take months to complete and have to be done at the client's place of business.

Fields where freelancing is fairly common include; writing, music, event planning and management, computer programming and related services, medical and other billing services, bookkeeping and accounting, tax preparation, legal services, word processing, web design and related services, translating, consulting... and the list goes on.

The truth is, almost anything you may have done in your regular job, you can do as a freelancer. Think about what you do now for an employer, or what you've done in the past. Stretch your vision and ask yourself; "Could that be done as a freelance job?" Chances are it can.

People who work freelance jobs are sometimes represented by an agency that resells their services. Others are completely independent.

Working independently as a freelancer allows you to be more competitive on price. But being independent also means you have to do all your own marketing. So there are trade-offs no matter which way you go.

One thing you might consider is a sort of hybrid scenario. Do some work through an agency, and some independently. Of course, you'll have to make sure the agency you're working with allows you to do that.

I have a personal friend named Dan who worked for someone else in the computer industry. He disliked his previous employer so much, he decided to go out on his own, even though he was making very good money there, and his job was very secure.

He's explained to me a couple of times what he does, but I still can't articulate it myself. But that doesn't matter - his clients certainly can. Dan has become very successful with his own "whatever he does with computers" business.

Even with the bad economy, he's managed to do well enough that he was able to buy his own building to house the increasing staff he's had to hire. And he hasn't had to let anyone go, despite the overall bad economy.

In my view, Dan can no longer be classified as a freelancer. But when he started, he was. In those days he worked out of a little office in the basement of his home and traveled all over the country to do freelance jobs for his clients. The growth he's experienced in the last ten years or so has been by choice, not necessity.

The point is this: Whatever your current situation, you could probably take whatever skills you have developed over the years and build your own home based business doing freelance jobs.

Whatever your reason for deciding to explore this idea, you may find that working freelance jobs from home is more desirable than having a "real" job. And who knows what it could grow into?
