This is where I get to talk a little bit about my observations of the world and my own little corner of it as it relates to home based business.

It also keeps you up-to-date with the latest changes to the Home-Based-Business-School.com website.

The Ultimate Business Empowerment Zone

I don't know about the rest of the world, but in the United States we have politicians at all levels of government who think it's the government's job to create opportunity for people. To that end, they develop policies and enact programs that are intended to give people in more econoically depressed areas some sort of leg up in starting a business. These programs are frequently referred to as "Business Empowerment Zones".

How's that for warm and fuzzy?

What these programs essentially do is a sort of reverse redlining.

For those who don't know, redlining is a practice by banks and mortgage companies that disqualifies certain neighborhoods for mortgage loans because the area is too run down. This practice is now illegal.

Business Empowerment Zones typically identify these very types of areas as needing a boost. Then they earmark government funds to create loan and grant pools that people can access to obtain the necessary capital to start operate a business.

Of course, all these politicians are really doing by creating these programs is spending tax dollars to get themselves re-elected. For them, it's all about job security - theirs. But that's another discussion.

The idea of providing opportunities for less fortunate people certainly has merit. But I think they're going about it all wrong.

Instead of providing expensive grants and loan guarantees for people to start brick and mortar type businesses in run down, depressed neighborhoods, they ought to consider helping people in those areas start internet businesses.

After all, the internet is the ultimate business empowerment zone.

Since it's really supposed to be about stimulating the local economies in these blighted areas, any profitable business will serve the purpose. And nothing poses less risk and offers greater success potential than an internet business. That's because nothing levels the business playing field like the world weide web.

When someone starts a brick and mortar business in one of those run down, economically depressed areas, they face more than just the typical risks associated with owning a business. There's the added challenge of security for the premises, the inventories, the employees, and the customers - not to mention the cash they might have on hand.

On ther other hand, an internet business can be started in that same neighborhood without having to worry about those security issues.

Think about that for a minute. It's not only less costly to start and operate an internet business, it's a lot safer too. And the customer base reaches beyond the neighborhood to the entire world.

Mind boggling, isn't it?

Everybody knows that the larger the potential customer base, the better chance a business has to succeed. So, if we really want to help people in economically depressed areas rise up out of the ashes and reverse the blight, doesn't it make sense to provide them with the best possible chance for success?

I think helping them start internet businesses is the best way to do that.

George Carlin's Take on Business

For those who don't know, George Carlin was a very popular stand-up comedian in the United States in the 1960s and 70s until his comedy started going over-the-line in terms of subject matter and language.

So why would I write about his take on business?

Well, perhaps implying that he even had a serious opinion on business is a bit of a stretch. But he used a line in one of his early comedy routines that has stuck with me for over forty years.

"...nail two things together that have never been nailed together before and some shmuck will buy it."

This statement was part of a broader context with the intent of inducing laughter from his audience. It had nothing to do with his trying to philosophize about business, but it became that for me, as crazy as that may sound.

Why do I think this statement is profound? Because it implies that there is a market for virtually anything. If we add a simple phrase to his statement, I think you'll begin to understand the value I see.

Nail two things together that have never been nailed together before and, if what you've created is useful or otherwise desirable, people will buy it.

It's really about creativity in business. You may think you don't have a creative bone in your body. But if you're running a business, or endeavoring to start one, you're actually being highly creative.

Just look at this definition of the word "create":

"To cause to come into being, as something unique that would not naturally evolve or that is not made by ordinary processes. To evolve from one's own thought or imagination, as a work of art or an invention."

When you start or expand a business, you're causing something to come into being that would not naturally evolve, aren't you? When you develop a new product or service, you're "nailing things together..." aren't you?

Get my point?

Being successful in business has a great deal to do with creating something for the marketplace that is new or different, and useful or otherwise desirable. It doesn't necessarily need to be a new product or service. Maybe you have a better way to do a particular thing, or a slightly different approach to something.

Whatever is is, if you can apply your creativity to that objective, you can become as successful as you want to be. You may even become the next Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, or Steve Jobs. Or maybe you'll just earn twice as much as you were earning before you started nailing things together that have never been nailed together before.

You could live with that, couldn't you?

It's Decision Time

We've been into the new year for almost two weeks now. So how many of your new years resolutions have already gone by the boards?

If you're like most people, many of your resolutions have either been modified in some way or given up on completely. I'd like to offer a possible explanation for why that happens so frequently.

The term "resolution" no longer carries sufficient weight in our subconscious minds to cause us to take the necessary sustained actions that will bring whatever we've resolved to fruition.

I think one reason for this is that we see political bodies make resolutions all the time with the desired result seldom, if ever, being accomplished. One need look no further that the United Nations for proof.

Whether you're a world body like the U.N. or a single individual, you must have sustained action in order for anything of significance to be accomplished.

So how do we do that?

Simple, really. Instead of making resolutions, make decisions. Although the word "decision" is part of the definition for the word "resolution", it seems to have more of a feeling of finality.

Resolutions have become wishy-washy to the point that we joke about them this time of year.

On the other hand, decisions can be cast-in-stone.

So here's the challenge:

Take a close look at all your resolutions, including the ones you've modified or discarded.

Evaluate each one and decide if it's something you really want.

If it isn't something you really want, let it go. And know that it's OK to let it go.

If it is something you really want, make a cast-in-stone decision that you'll do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to make it happen.

Don't resolve to do something anymore, decide to do it.

The Fundamental Unit

Everyone knows that the family is the fundamental unit of society. But do you know what the fundamental unit of business and the economy is?

If your answer is the home based business, you're right.

Just as all the great leaders in society started out in families, many great businesses began as home based business.

Take a look at facebook.com. A multi-billion dollar internet giant today, facebook was started by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004 from his Harvard University dorm room. While there are those who would argue that Zuckerberg stole the idea for facebook from fellow students, the fact remains that this wildly successful business began as a home based business.

Another well-known example is Apple Computer. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak started Apple in 1976 with Ronald Wayne who gave up his share of the company less than two weeks after it started. According to Wikipedia, Apple started in Steve Jobs' bedroom and was soon moved to his garage. Another highly successful business that began as a home based business.

These are two very well-known examples, but there are tens of thousands of very successful businesses in the world that had similar beginnings. And, if you searched history, you'd find that many of the iconic names in business today have their roots in home based enterprises.

The point is this:

The economy is ultimately driven by comsumer activity, and consumers must have jobs in order to earn money and buy what they consume.

Most jobs in the United States are said to be created by small businesses (defined by the U.S. Small Business Administration as having fewer than 500 employees).

Many small businesses start out as home based businesses. Incidentally, most large businesses are just small businesses that continued to grow.

Following this logic, it's easy to see that the home based business really is the fundamental unit of business and the economy.

Critical Thinking and the Home Based Business

Several years ago I had occasion to seek the help of a professional counselor to help me get through a somewhat difficult time in my life.

Okay, stop chuckling...

I only saw her for three or four appointments over a period of six weeks or so, but I learned something that has helped me immeasurably in the years since. Early on in my time with her, she pointed something out to me that I hadn't realized prior to that, but that has stuck with me ever since.

She suggested that the root cause of many of the problems people face, whether complex or simple, is their inability to engage in critical thought.

But what the heck is critical thought or thinking anyway?

I'd be willing to bet if you asked a hundred average people on the street what critical thinking is, many wouldn't be able to come up with a reasonable definition. I'd further assert that a greater percentage of those who do know what it is are, or one day will be, successful.

Conversely, of those who don't know what it is, a smaller percentage are, or ever will be, successful.

Critical thinking is a thought process that questions assumptions as a way of concluding whether a claim is true, false, or sometimes true and sometimes false, or partly true and partly false. It's thought that focuses on deciding what to do or what to believe.

In short, critical thinking is the act of exercising judgment.

Those who know what critical thinking is probably engage in it, at least unconsciously. That's a big part of the reason why most are, or will be successful.

Those who don't know what it is are less likely to engage in it, except by accident. That's a big part of the reason why most of them never achieve success.

Let's explore how this all applies to the home based business.

Back to our hundred average people. Only this time we're talking to a hundred average people who are also aspiring entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurs who know what critical thinking is probably engage in it. That's a big part of the reason why most are, or will be successful.

Those entrepreneurs who don't know what it is are less likely to engage in it. That's a big part of the reason why most of them never achieve success.

The critical thinking entrepreneur is far more likely to get involved with a business venture that really does have solid success potential. He or she is less likely to fall victim to scams or bogus get rich quick schemes.

On the other hand, non critical thinkers tend to chase one rainbow after another looking for their slice of that great pie in the sky.

Here's the question you need to ask yourself: "Am I a critical thinker?"

Well... Are you?

What's the Mother of Your Invention?

I'm sure most of us have heard the expression; "Necessity is the mother of invention."

Man's necessity for greater mobility is what brought about the invention of the automobile, railroads, airplanes, and even spacecraft.

Man's necessity for greater knowledge is what brought about the invention of the printing press, electronic publishing, and the internet.

It doesn't matter if the necessity came about as part of a greater need, or was created for some specific purpose in and of itself. The important take away is that necessity, on whatever level, truly is the mother of invention.

Now let's bring the discussion down to your invention - your business.

I've found that in almost every case, people start their own business out of some level of personal necessity. Often, it's because they've lost their job and have been unable to find adequate employment.

That's certainly familiar to many people these days, isn't it? Maybe even you.

Unfortunately, many people who have some sort of necessity wait longer than they should to start a home based business. In these cases, necessity isn't the mother of invention. Desperation is. And when desperation is the mother of invention, it often leads to frustration and failure.

Desperation is a big reason why there are so many "get rich quick" and "get rich easy" scam artists out there, especially on the internet. But, when people are desperate, they're very susceptible to scams and scammers.

The result is, people get rich. Oh, not the people who buy into the scams, just the scammers themselves.

The lesson here is this: Don't let yourself get to a point where you're so desperate you become an easy mark for scam artists, online or off.

If it's too late, and you're already desperate, take any job you can get to help pay for food, roof and heat while you grow your business part-time.

Let necessity resume her role as the mother of your invention - your home based business. And, just as a mother serves to love and nurture her young through childhood and adolescence to maturity, let necessity be a motivating force behind your doing whatever it takes, for however long it takes, to love and nurture your business to profitability.

At some point along the way, you'll be able to quit flipping burgers, or greeting customers at Walmart.

We Make It All Up

Proverbs 23:7 teaches that as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.

This is the key principal that we must apply in creating a positive vision for our lives.

There was a research study done where college students who played basketball were broken up into three different groups. The first group went to the gym every day and practiced shooting foul shots. The second group sat in a room, closed their eyes and visualized themselves successfully making foul shots. The third group did nothing.

After thirty days, each group was tested on how well they did as compared to their performance one month earlier.

The group that did nothing showed no improvement. In fact, their skills even slipped a little.

The group that practiced in the gym for a half-hour everyday improved their foul shooting by 24 percent.

And the group that simply visualized shooting the shots successfully in their minds was 23 percent better than they were a month before! In other words, these guys just sat around and made believe that they were better at shooting foul shots, and they were!

The human mind makes no distinction between what we actually experience and the visions we create in our minds. A vividly imagined experience has the same programming quality and impact as an actual, "real" experience. To our mind, they are exactly the same!

Even an actual experience is no more than a perception of your mind. You have an experience and your mind has a perception of that experience. That perception is the vision of what that experience was for you. And your perception is not the only perception of that experience. Other people who witness your experience may perceive something entirely different, and they frequently do.

You make up what happens by the thoughts and feelings you have about your experience.

Think for a moment of a particular event that happened to you a long time ago - something you did which was stupid or embarrassing - something you called "a failure".

How many times did that particular event actually happen? Hopefully only once. But how many times have you relived that event, vividly picturing every single detail, every thought, every word, every feeling, and every sensation you experienced? Twenty or thirty times? Hundreds, perhaps thousands?

Every time you relive that one event in your mind, it has the exact same subconscious impact on you as it did the very first time it happened.

What do you suppose happens when you multiply that impact by the hundreds or even thousands of times you relived that event in your mind? All of this combines to make up your current vision. And the truth is, you made it all up!

Who you are and what you will accomplish with your life is a self-fulfilling prophecy. The truth about yourself is what you choose it to be, and if you don't consciously choose, you unconsciously choose.

Work Toward Tomorrow Today

Someone recently asked how they could start a business relating to their passion when they need income now just to survive.

The answer is, you have to do both.

While pursuing your passion (or dream, or whatever you want to call it) you still have to act in your present circumstances. But your current actions relative to making money ought to be focused in the direction of your ultimate business goal - making money with your passion.

Here's a quote from my new ebook that might give you some perspective:

"The only time that exists is now. And whatever your action is, it's most likely to be in your present job or business... Don't wait for a change of environment before you act. Instead, work to create a change in environment by action aimed in that direction.

You can act upon your current environment in such a way as to cause yourself to move to a better environment. Focus with faith and purpose on the vision of yourself in the better environment. Then act upon your present environment with all your heart, might, mind, and strength."

Will it be hard? Probably.

Will it be worth it? Only you can answer that.

The Honor System - Alive and Well

Several years ago, after a visit to her home town of Brigham City Utah, my wife told me about a copy center there that is open 24 hours, and has no staff on site to take customer money. This store is actually based on the honor system. The store owners trust patrons to make copies, do laminating or bookbinding, or whatever other services they offer and then place their cash or check for the appropriate amount of money into a locked steel box.

This store was opened sometime in the early 1990s, and has been operating successfully ever since. They apparently even have a second store in Logan Utah.

You'd think such a business model would be doomed to failure in the long term, wouldn't you?

Well, my wife recently read an article in her hometown newspaper about how the business had been sold. A short time after the sale, the new owners noticed that an inordinate amount of copy paper was missing from the store. They immediately did an accounting of the receipts versus the amount of missing paper and discovered that there was only about a three percent variance, which is apparently well within the normal range for copy centers.

This story should serve as proof that the honor system can still work in our society, and as a call to each of us as individuals to be worthy of the trust it implies.

Becoming More

One of the top news stories in the U.S. lately has been the "Occupy Wall Street" protests. I'm not going to editorialize on this phenomenon, although I do have some strong opinions about it. Instead, I'm going to tell you a story that you won't see on the news, but that's more significant in the overall social and economic scheme of things.

Earlier this week, while I was in my home office working on my latest book, the doorbell rang. It being the middle of the morning on a weekday, that was an unusual occurrence.

When I answered it, the young man of barely 20 standing on my front porch introduced himself as Dan, and offered his hand for a handshake. I don't know if you've noticed this or not, but in this day and age, it's unusual for young people to initiate a handshake. Like so many other gestures of courtesy and professionalism, it just doesn't seem to be taught anymore.

After Dan introduced himself, he went on to tell me that he was working part-time at a package delivery company and supplementing that income by providing lawn mowing services to people in the neighborhood. He was canvassing for new clients and I'm sure he was prompted to ring my doorbell because my lawn needed mowing - it was actually on my "to do" list for that day.

When I told him that I take care of my own lawn, he went to plan B, which was to tell me that he also does snow removal in winter. Well, I do that myself too, as well as my next-door-neighbor's who's an elderly widow. I congratulated him on his spirit of self-reliance and referred him to a friend across the street who just lost her husband less than a month ago. He thanked me for the referral and left.

I tell the story of Dan because it gives me hope for our social and economic future. As I returned to working on my book, I hopefully wondered how many other people, young and old, are out there taking responsibility for their own lives.

The following day I spoke with my recently widowed friend who told me she had hired Dan to take care of her lawn. I was glad to hear that.

Anthony Robbins said; "Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more."

Congratulations to Dan, and all the other patriots out there who are quietly "becoming more".

Low Employment for Young Adults

According to 2010 U.S. Census data released about two weeks ago, the country's young adult population, ages 16 to 29, is one of the worst hit by the current shortage of jobs. According to the data, only 55.3 percent of this group is employed - the worst it's been since the end of World War II.

In 2000, 67.3 percent of this demographic was employed. That's better than it is today, but still depressingly low.

If ever there was a solid reason for more people, especially in this age group, to start a home based business, this is it.

Some Thoughts on Taking Surveys

I've tried survey sites in the past and never seemed to "qualify" (demographically, I guess) for any good surveys. That wouldn't be so bad, but it seemed that the survey I had to take just to determine whether I qualified to take the real survey always took more time than I was willing to give away. After all, time is money, right?

If there's a "trick" (short of falsifying information) to consistently making money with surveys, I'd like to know what it is. I'm not sure I would do it myself again, only because of how busy I am already. But I'd certainly include some information on Home-Based-Business-School.com about survey taking as a viable home based business, if it is indeed viable.

If anyone out there in the ether has some insights they'd like to share with me on the subject, contact me through the link below.

Perspective on Your Business

There are many great tools available today to assist you in your efforts to make money with your own home based business. Of course, how much you can make depends a great deal on the business you're starting. If you offer a good product or service, you'll be around for a long time. And company/product longevity is an important key.

Another determining factor in your success is your own level commitment. If you started a business with the idea of getting rich quick, I strongly encourage you to rethink your motivation. The truth is, while it may be mathematically possible to achieve a significant income level relatively quickly in whatever business you're starting, it's probably not all that likely.

Does that mean you shouldn't bother starting a home based business? Absolutely not! But you should pursue your business with realistic expectations. Don't be discouraged if you can't buy that million dollar house, the hundred thousand dollar car, or a two week vacation in the South Pacific right away. Know that with persistence and perseverance, you can and probably will succeed one day.

Remember: If you continue to try, you might fail. If you quit trying, you will fail.

The Banker and the Fisherman

An investment banker was standing on the dock at a small town on the Pacific coast. As he stood there, he noticed a small fishing boat that had just tied up to the dock with just one fisherman on it. Inside the boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The banker complimented the fisherman on the size of his catch and asked; "How long did it take you to catch so many fish?"

The fisherman replied; "Only a little while."

The banker then asked; "Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more fish?"

The fisherman said; "I've caught enough to support the immediate needs of my family."

Then the banker asked; "Well, what do you do with the rest of your time?"

The fisherman said; "I sleep late, play with my children, spend time with my wife, stroll into town in the evening to have a few beers and play guitar with my friends. Then, when I need to, I fish a little more."

The banker excitedly said; "I'm a Harvard MBA. I can help you. If you'd spend more time fishing, you could earn a much better income. Then you could buy a bigger boat which would enable you to make even more money. With that you could buy more boats and eventually have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your tuna to a middleman you could sell them directly to the processor. In time you even could open your own cannery. That would enable you to control the entire process of bringing the fish to the consumer. You could leave this small town and move to Los Angeles where you'd run your expanding enterprise."

The fisherman asked; "So, how long would all this take?"

The banker replied; "Probably 15 to 20 years."

"And what then?"; asked the fisherman.

The investment banker smiled proudly and said; "That's the best part. When the time is right you could do an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich. You'd make millions."

The fisherman asked; "Millions? Then what?"

The banker replied; "Then you could retire. Move to a picturesque coastal town and live a life of abundance. You could sleep as late as you like, go fishing whenever you wished, and spend quality time with your wife, children, and grand children. Then in the evening you could stroll into town to have a few beers and play guitar with your friends."

Abundance means different things to different people. The question is; what does it mean to you? When you focus on understanding that, you'll be better able to discover how to make it happpen.

Job Security has become an Oxymoron

Everywhere we turn these days we see the effects of the sluggish economy. Turn on any network or cable television newscast, pick up any newspaper, or riffle through any issue of any news weekly, and you're bound to see some sort of economic bad news. The most obvious effect, the one people read about and worry about most is the loss of jobs. I'd venture to say that everyone either knows someone who has lost their job, or has lost a job themselves. In many cases, people are being let go after being with their respective employers for years.

Welcome to the new reality: "Job Security" has become an oxymoron.

The Old Paradigm

The problem is, far too many people in today's workforce are stuck in an outdated paradigm. They still believe that once they find a good job they'll be there for their entire working life, if they just do a good job. This is not a minimum-wage or lower-bracket phenomenon. This paradigm exists through all professions and income levels. But it's no longer valid.

Brutal Reality

Here is a brutal reality of the global economy: If a company can find a more cost-effective way to produce their goods or services, they have to do it to stay competitive regardless of how many people might lose their jobs. Companies are in business to provide goods and services and to do so at minimum cost and maximum profit. They are not in business to provide jobs to any particular group of people, or in any particular geographic location.

Other Options

The truth is, there are other options available, but they aren't going to fall into your lap. It's time for you to start thinking the way the companies you used to work for think. It's time for you to start thinking realistically about your long-term future.

Too many people have been living their lives paycheck to paycheck. Their idea of long-term planning is deciding what to do in those couple of months each year when they get that "extra" paycheck. It's time to start thinking beyond what you do now. It's time to expand your vision, not only of what's possible, but what's necessary for your long-term financial security. You need to start actively looking for ways to create your own financial security, before you find yourself living from unemployment check to unemployment check.

One good option is to start a home based business. Whether you're currently employed or not, a home based business can become a great safety net for you and your family. And the best part is, you control it.

Ground Floor, Please

Wherever you are in your network marketing experience, from "just looking into it" to "seasoned veteran", you have no doubt heard some form of the expression "Ground Floor Opportunity". Perhaps you've used it to describe you particular opportunity when talking to prospective distributors. Maybe someone used that expression on you.

There are three descriptive variations of the Ground Floor Opportunity. First, there's the standard description, which simply refers to a start-up or fairly new company. Then there's the hybrid, which offers a Ground Floor Opportunity with an established company. This refers to an established company launching a new division or product line. And finally, there are those who refer to their opportunity as being "The Basement" in an effort to make it sound more Ground Floor than any other Ground Floor Opportunity!

Whichever variation is used and whatever the circumstances under which it's used, it's always meant to imply that you're more likely to make a lot of money with that particular opportunity than any other.

It seems to me that far too much is made of this entire issue. It creates too much confusion for prospective and new network marketers in an industry that wants to be known for its simplicity. Adding fuel to this fire of confusion is the ongoing debate between the "Ground Floor" proponents and those who promote the "Stable is Better" philosophy. I'd like to offer a simple point of view on the subject that could end this debate and allow us all to just get on with doing our business.

Whether an opportunity is with a brand new company, a well established company, or one that lies somewhere in between, there is no real or implied guarantee of success. Those who are already in the business know that very well. They know from personal experience that success in this business really depends on only one thing, the network marketer himself (and that's a whole 'nother article).

I believe that in Network Marketing they're all Ground Floor Opportunities! Whichever company a new network marketer decides to affiliate with, he adds the "ground floorness" to it because he is on the ground floor of his personal network of contacts. Even if some of the people in his personal network have heard about network marketing and/or his opportunity before and passed on it, he brings something new to the equation that makes it new, unique, and "Ground Floor".

Think about it.
