Home Business Ideas

If you’re reading this page, you're probably still looking for some home business ideas to consider. But before we get any further along in that process, I encourage you to go through the Business Ideas Generator exercise, if you haven‘t already done so.

If you have gone through the ideas generator exercise, but don’t feel as though you have enough quality ideas to choose from, this section should be of help.

Some important things to consider are:

  • Your level of passion about a particular product or service…
  • Your level of expertise in a particular product or service area…
  • The profit potential of a particular business idea...
  • The potential start-up costs involved…

Let's discuss these in some detail.

Passion

Your level of passion is as important to your business success as your level of passion toward a spouse is to a successful marriage. If you don't honestly love what you're involved with, it will eventually become boring and mundane.

That's not to say if you love what you're doing you won't have any bad days. You will. But a high level of passion for your business will enable you to stay motivated when there's a challenge to overcome. And there will be challenges.

Expertise

Imagine trying to fly a plane without ever having learned how. You might be able to get off the ground. You might even be able to stay aloft for a little while. But eventually, and sooner rather than later, you're going to crash and burn.

The same is true in business. In order to succeed you must have a certain level of expertise related to what you're endeavoring to do. Without it you may be okay for a while. But eventually, and sooner rather than later, your business will "crash and burn".

Profit Potential

The importance of profit potential when considering a home business idea should be obvious. Some say if you do what you love, the money will follow. I agree with that. If you really love what you're doing, you'll eventually figure out how to make it profitable, but most people don't have the resources to survive while they're figuring out how to make what they love profitable.

Of course, there are many fields that have already proven to be profitable. If what you love happens to be in one of those fields, you're in pretty good shape. But if it isn't, you need to be very careful going in.

The bottom line is this: If what you're doing doesn't have sufficient profit potential to enable you to earn a decent living from it, it's really just a hobby.

Hobbies in and of themselves aren't bad. But if you want your business to survive and succeed, make sure it has reasonable profit potential.

Start-up Costs

Adequate start-up funding is critical to long term success. You need to be able to survive between initial start-up and profitability. For the home based business, you should have enough to cover start-up expenses, plus at least six months of operating capital and living expenses set aside to enable you to ride out the rough spots.

Another alternative is to keep your full time job, if you have one, and do your business part time until it reaches a point where it can sustain both itself and you. This is a real balancing act, and will probably take longer, but it can be done.

Are there any of these that are more or less important than the others? I don't think so. I believe you really need all four to fit your particular situation if you’re to be successful in your new business. So it’s vitally important that you be completely honest with yourself as you evaluate your home business idea.

As you evaluate various home business ideas, apply the same principles you used on the Business Ideas Generator.
